Oystercatchers in Cumbria

The oystercatcher in Cumbria is considered an Amber-listed species in the UK, indicating its vulnerable status due to various environmental pressures. These birds are commonly found along the Cumbrian coast, particularly in areas like Morecambe Bay, which provides a rich feeding habitat. Oystercatchers thrive on mussels and cockles, and their unique feeding techniques are passed down through generations. However, despite their adaptability, including moving inland during food shortages, their population faces challenges due to habitat loss and changes in coastal environments.

Efforts to monitor and protect oystercatchers are ongoing, including local bird clubs tracking their movements and conservation projects aimed at raising awareness about their importance. Conservation groups like the Cumbria Wildlife Trust encourage public participation in birdwatching and support for coastal wildlife, which is crucial for safeguarding species like the oystercatcher.

Despite their name, oystercatchers rarely eat oysters. Instead, they use their specialized beaks to open shellfish, often employing techniques like prising shells apart or hammering them on rocks. They are also known to move inland during wet periods to feed on earthworms if food along the shore is scarce.

All the photographs are of local breeding birds around the Barrow-in-Furness region, including the bird below which is nesting (note the visable egg just below the bird…) in a very unusual location on Cavendish Docks!

And this bird that loved sitting on street lights!
