Wetherlam – October 2024

Wetherlam is a prominent mountain, or “fell,” located in the English Lake District in Cumbria. It is part of the Coniston Fells range, a popular area for hikers due to its scenic beauty and relatively accessible paths.

Key Features of Wetherlam:

  • Height: Wetherlam has an elevation of 763 meters (2,503 feet), making it one of the higher fells in the Lake District.
  • Location: It lies to the northeast of Coniston Water and forms part of the Coniston group of fells, alongside well-known peaks like The Old Man of Coniston and Swirl How.
  • Geology: Wetherlam is composed largely of slate and volcanic rocks, typical of the Lake District’s rugged landscape. The area was historically important for copper and slate mining.

Walking and Hiking Routes:

  • Popular Approach: Many hikers ascend Wetherlam from the village of Coniston, following a path via Coppermines Valley, a route that offers dramatic views and a glimpse into the region’s mining history. Other routes include ascents from Tilberthwaite or combining the climb with neighboring fells like Swirl How for a more challenging walk.
  • Views: From the summit of Wetherlam, there are sweeping views of the surrounding Lake District landscape, including Coniston Water, Windermere, and the distant Scafells (the highest peaks in England). The view also extends to the Irish Sea and the Isle of Man on clear days.

Historical and Cultural Significance:

  • Mining Heritage: The area around Wetherlam, particularly in Coppermines Valley, has a rich history of mining. Copper was extracted from the hills from the 16th century, and evidence of old mines, tracks, and buildings can still be seen today, adding a historical element to walks in the area.

Nearby Attractions:

  • Coniston Water: One of the larger lakes in the Lake District, famous for its beauty and historical associations with Donald Campbell, who attempted water speed records here.
  • Old Man of Coniston: Many hikers combine a trek up Wetherlam with a climb up this neighboring fell to complete a challenging but rewarding day in the Coniston Fells.

Wetherlam offers a rich combination of natural beauty, historical interest, and fantastic hiking, making it a favorite among both seasoned walkers and those new to the Lake District fells.
