Red Squirrels in Cumbria

Red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris are a native species in Cumbria, particularly within the Lake District, which serves as a significant sanctuary for these animals. The region supports the largest population of red squirrels in England.

However, recent surveys indicate a concerning trend: grey squirrels, an invasive non-native species, are now more prevalent than red squirrels in both Northumberland and Cumbria. Grey squirrels carry the squirrelpox virus, which is harmless to them but often fatal to red squirrels, contributing significantly to the decline of red populations.

Local conservation groups, such as Northern Red Squirrels, are actively working to protect and monitor red squirrel populations. In Cumbria alone, there are 16 local red squirrel groups, with 15 represented by Northern Red Squirrels. These groups encourage the public to report sightings of both red and grey squirrels to aid in conservation efforts.

Despite these challenges, red squirrels continue to inhabit various woodlands across Cumbria. Conservation interventions have shown some positive results, with red squirrels still present in areas like Kielder Forest. However, the increasing presence of grey squirrels poses an ongoing threat, underscoring the need for continued and enhanced conservation efforts to ensure the survival of red squirrels in the region.

If you spot a red or grey squirrel in Cumbria, you can report your sighting to the nearest red squirrel group to assist in monitoring and conservation initiatives.
