Drake Teal

Drake Teal

A drake (male) teal, has striking and distinctive plumage, particularly in its breeding season. The bird in the photograph was taken on 20th March 2025.

The head features a deep chestnut-brown color with an iridescent green eye patch that extends from the eye to the back of the head, bordered by a fine yellowish line. The breast is pale, speckled with fine dark spots, while the flanks are a smooth, soft grey. The back is darker, with a mix of grey and brown tones. A bold, creamy-yellow patch on the rear contrasts sharply with the black undertail. The wings display a characteristic green speculum bordered by white, which is especially noticeable in flight. The bill is dark grey, and the legs are a dull greyish color. In eclipse plumage, the male resembles the female but retains some of its distinctive markings.
