The Red Fox in Cumbria

The Red Fox is one of the most widespread mammals in Britain and is present throughout northern England, including Cumbria. The Cumbria Mammal Atlas shows records of the species distributed across the county, from lowland farmland and woodland to upland fringes and even the edges of urban areas. However, as with many common species, the mapped records almost certainly under-represent its true abundance. The fox is adaptable and elusive, often going unnoticed despite living in close proximity to people, and many encounters are never formally reported. It remains a familiar element of the Cumbrian landscape, both in rural settings where it hunts small mammals and scavenges, and in towns and villages where it exploits food from gardens and waste. The atlas therefore provides only a partial picture, and the Red Fox is likely to be even more widespread in Cumbria than the records suggest.

The map below shows the distribution in Cumbria….
