BNG and UKHabs

PLEASE NOTE: With over 20 years of experience in Ecology, I have observed significant changes in the field, particularly with the introduction of UKHabs and Biodiversity Net Gain. After careful consideration, I have decided that, starting 1st January 2025, I will exclusively undertake UKHabs and BNG survey work as a sub-contractor for other ecology firms. I will no longer accept projects directly from private clients. This transition enables me to concentrate on industry collaborations while adapting to the evolving landscape of ecological work.

BNG

Biodiversity net gain (BNG) is an approach to development, and/or land management, that aims to leave the natural environment in a measurably better state than it was beforehand.

Biodiversity net gain delivers measurable improvements for biodiversity by creating or enhancing habitats in association with development. Biodiversity net gain can be achieved on-site, off-site or through a combination of on-site and off-site measures.

UKHabs

The UK Habitat Classification system (also referred to as UKHab) is a coding system used for surveying and classifying habitats when conducting a habitat assessment. By assigning specific ecological features a primary habitat code, secondary code, and condition score, it enables ecosystems to be mapped with accuracy and detail.

Andrew Chick

For over 20 years, I have worked as an Independent Ecologist and Protected Species Surveyor, conducting ecological surveys across a diverse range of habitats. My experience spans a variety of projects, including Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs) for SPAs, SACs, and RAMSAR sites, as well as work on wind turbines (both small and large), solar parks, pipelines, and road schemes. I am based in Cumbria and I have extensive expertise in bird and bat survey methodologies, ensuring thorough and accurate assessments for every project.
