Water Pipit Anthus spinoletta is a scarce but widespread winter visitor and passage migrant to England, occurring mainly on wetlands, flooded fields, reservoirs and coastal marshes. Most arrive from continental Europe during October and November, remaining until March or April. In winter they are rather unobtrusive, with grey-brown upperparts and heavily streaked underparts, but by early spring some develop the attractive pinkish underparts and greyer head of breeding plumage before departing for their European breeding grounds.
