The Red Grouse (Lagopus scotica) is one of the most characteristic birds of the uplands of northern Britain. In north-west England it is particularly associated with extensive areas of heather moorland and blanket bog, where its distinctive calls and explosive flight are a familiar feature of the high fells. Unlike many of the other birds occupying these landscapes, Red Grouse are highly sedentary and remain on the moors throughout the year, surviving even severe winter conditions by feeding largely on heather.

Distribution in the North-west

Within north-west England, the principal populations occur across the Pennine uplands of Cumbria and Lancashire, particularly where extensive areas of heather-dominated moorland remain. The North Pennines form part of one of the major British strongholds: nationally, the highest densities occur in the Pennines, North York Moors, Cheviots, eastern Borders and eastern Highlands.

In Cumbria, Red Grouse are therefore much more characteristic of the eastern and north-eastern uplands than of the central Lake District. The extensive moorlands running along the Pennine fringe provide considerably more suitable habitat than the heavily grazed grass and rocky fells that dominate much of the Lake District. The North Pennines National Landscape describes Red Grouse as a year-round resident of its heather moors, with some areas supporting large numbers even during winter.

Lancashire also retains important areas of suitable upland habitat, particularly on the Pennine moors in the east of the county. Together, these areas form part of a much larger belt of grouse country extending along the Pennines through northern England.

A Bird Dependent on Heather

The fortunes of Red Grouse are closely linked to the condition and extent of heather moorland. Heather provides both food and cover, with the birds feeding particularly heavily on its young shoots. A varied structure containing young, nutritious heather alongside taller, older vegetation providing shelter can therefore support relatively high densities.

Much of the best Red Grouse habitat in northern England has historically been managed for driven grouse shooting. Moorland management has traditionally included rotational cutting or burning of heather to produce a patchwork of vegetation of different ages. In the North Pennines this characteristic mosaic remains conspicuous across many grouse moors.

Management for grouse has undoubtedly helped retain extensive areas of open heather moorland that might otherwise have undergone substantial changes in land use. However, some aspects of intensive grouse-moor management, including burning on peat, drainage and predator control, have generated considerable conservation debate. Restoration projects elsewhere in the northern uplands are increasingly attempting to restore damaged blanket bog by blocking drains, rewetting peat and modifying previous burning and grazing regimes. At RSPB Geltsdale in Cumbria, for example, former grouse moor and sheep-grazing land has undergone extensive habitat restoration since the 1990s.

Breeding and Population Fluctuations

Pairs form during the winter and males become conspicuously territorial, particularly as spring approaches. Females nest on the ground, laying their eggs in a shallow vegetation-lined scrape from April onwards. A typical clutch contains around six to nine eggs, and the precocial chicks develop remarkably quickly, becoming capable of flight when only about two weeks old.

Numbers can fluctuate considerably between years. Red Grouse populations are famous for their cyclical changes in abundance, with parasite burdens — particularly the strongyle worm Trichostrongylus tenuis — among the factors involved. Weather, breeding success, habitat condition, predation and land management can all contribute to variation between years and between different moors.

Despite remaining locally numerous on well-managed northern moors, the longer-term picture is less positive. Current BTO figures indicate an estimated British breeding population of about 265,000 pairs, with the UK breeding population showing a 27% decrease between 1995 and 2024 and a substantial longer-term contraction in breeding range.

Part of a Distinctive Upland Community

Red Grouse are also an important component of a much richer upland bird community. The heather moors and blanket bogs of north-west England can support breeding Golden Plover, Dunlin, Curlew, Merlin and Short-eared Owl, while the moorland fringes and neighbouring rough grasslands provide habitat for species including Black Grouse, Lapwing, Snipe and Ring Ouzel. The North Pennines are particularly important for this assemblage of upland birds.

The relationship between Red Grouse management and birds of prey is considerably more contentious. Hen Harriers prey on Red Grouse, producing a long-running conflict between raptor conservation and driven grouse shooting in northern England. Natural England describes this as one of England’s most persistent human–wildlife conflicts, and Cumbria and Lancashire are among the counties where measures such as diversionary feeding of Hen Harriers have been permitted.

For anyone exploring the high moors of the North Pennines or Lancashire Pennines, however, Red Grouse remain one of the defining birds of the landscape. Often they are first detected by the male’s wonderfully evocative, accelerating “go-back, go-back, go-back” call before a bird suddenly erupts from the heather and speeds low across the moor. Few species are quite so closely identified with the heather-clad uplands of north-west England.
